The Namibian Police have confirmed the deaths of four men in separate drowning incidents reported in different parts of the country over the weekend.
According to the police’s spokesperson, deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, Salomo Homateni Akudhenga (37) was found dead in a water pan at Ondando village in the Oshikoto region.
Shikwambi said Akudhenga was last seen on Friday at around 20h00, drinking omagongo (marula drink) at Olumbongo location.
His family reported him missing to the Onethindi police station the following evening.
It is alleged that on Sunday morning, his relatives began searching for him and found his body in a water pan near his village.
“The police suspect he drowned. His body was taken to the Onandjokwe State Hospital mortuary for a postmortem. His next of kin have been informed,” Shikwambi said.
A second drowning was reported at Lekkerwater settlement farm at Kamdescha in the Kunene region.
It was reported that on Tuesday the deceased, who has been identified as Vivien Hamaseb (20), was seen on the neighboring farm. On Sunday at about 12h30, his body was discovered in the river stuck on a tree.
“No foul play is suspected at this stage. The cause of death is unknown and a postmortem will be conducted to determine the causes. The deceased is a Namibian male. His next of kin were informed and investigation continues,” Shikwambi said.
In another case, a 24-year-old Angolan goat herder drowned at Otjiperengo village in the Sesfontein area in the Kunene region.
According to the police, the man did not return with his goats on Saturday.
Shikwambi said fellow villagers searched for him and found his clothes next to a water hole. The following day, they returned and retrieved his body from the water.
His next of kin have not yet been informed, and investigations continue.
The fourth drowning occurred at Orutjandja location at Opuwo. Shikwambi said an Angolan man drowned while attempting to cross a river during heavy rain on Sunday.
“His next of kin have been informed, and a postmortem will be conducted to determine the cause
of death,” she said.
