Four regions without governors as new members of National Assembly are sworn in

Four regions are temporarily without governors after James Uerikua, Salomon April, Marius Sheya and Sirkka Ausiku were sworn in as members of the eighth session of the National Assembly for the ruling party.

Namibia is in its transitional period, with a new administration set to take the reins on Friday and a new National Assembly to be formed.

The positions became vacant when these governors were sworn in as members of the National Assembly on Thursday morning.

Uerikua was the governor of the Otjozondjupa region, Ausiku is from the Kavango West region, April led the Hardap region and Sheya was the governor of the Kunene region.

These four made it to the top 51 members of parliament for Swapo.

President-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is expected to make announcements to fill these positions in the coming days.

The lawmakers of the National Assembly are going to be sworn in along with the members from the Landless People’s Movement, Independent Patriots for Change, Affirmative Repositioning, Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters, National Democracy Party, Popular Democratic Movement, National Unity Democratic Organisation, All People’s Party, Body of Christ, Republican Party, Swanu of Namibia and the United Democratic Front.

“Our oath is to make sure that the dignity of our people is restored,” Independent Patriot for Change’s Michael Mwashindange told The Namibian shortly before the swearing in ceremony on Thursday.
