Martin Freyer and Anri Greeff clinched the Paratus Namibian Cycle Classic 2024 men’s and women’s mountain bike titles in Windhoek on Saturday.
Freyer came first in the 50km mountain bike road race, which was reduced to a 42km route, with a time of 01:36:55, while Greeff finished first in a time of 01:58:24.
Freyer also participated in the 100km road race in which he came second to Theuns van der Westhuizen, who won with a time of 02:32:09. Jaques Hanekom came third with a time of 02:32:10.
Speaking to The Namibian after his race on Saturday, Freyer said he was happy with his performance.
“First time doing a slightly shorter route with a lot more single track, which suited me really well. I really enjoyed it,” he said.
Greeff found it tough, but said she managed to pull through.
“Initially, when I thought the route was shorter, it was going to be a lot easier. But it was a good route,” she said.
In the other categories, the Cycle Classic’s longevity and impact remains unparalleled, making it one of the most important projects under the Rotary Club Windhoek (RCW) banner, says club president Shareen Thude.
“It is well known that The Namibian has been a brand sponsor of Rotary Club Windhoek’s Cycle Classic since this community service and fundraising event was launched at the start of this century,” she said.
“What is not so well known is that The Namibian annually pays the entry fees of more than 100 cyclists with physical and intellectual challenges, and of participants from previously disadvantaged communities.
“We thank you, The Namibian, for the excellent partnership built over the years.”
This year’s event was also made possible with the support of Namibia Breweries, CIC/Energade, Gondwana Collection, OshMed, FabuPharm, the Road Fund Administration, Olympia Biokenetics, Aesthetic Dentistry, Prosperity Health and John Meinert Printers.
