Gabi Woermann, a beloved member of the Swakopmund community, passed away peacefully on Sunday, 2 April, at the age of 83.

“She was watching television in the comfort of her home,” her daughter, Isa Woermann, told The Namibian.

Woermann is survived by her four children, 14 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She and her late husband, Konrad Woermann, were key figures in the Woermann Brock empire, playing a significant role in the development of the local economy and creating numerous job opportunities for the community.

She was not just a devoted mother and grandmother, but also an active member of her gymnastics group and a familiar face to the swimmers at Swakopmund’s Mole. Those who knew her will remember her love for Namibia and its people, her commitment to community service, and her relentless passion for social justice.

As an advocate for people’s rights, Woermann was interested in Namibia’s politics and development. Her strong voice and outspoken nature often shed light on critical issues at both the local and national level.

“Our mother’s unwavering dedication to her community will be sorely missed,” Isa noted.

“In addition to her activism, Gabi was known for her unique and quirky attributes. She was an avid swimmer who would boldly brave the ocean’s waves and defy any obstacles that came her way – including bathing restrictions. While some may have been taken aback by Gabi’s frankness, it was always clear that her candid remarks were rooted in her deep care and concern for others.

“Her friendliness and courage to speak out will be remembered as hallmarks of her vibrant personality,” said Isa.
