UNWRAP.ONLINEKwaito artist Gazza has announced the postponement of the launch of his new album ‘Messiah’.
In an unprecedented move, the artist said he wants to focus on his personal life and family for now.
The album launch was scheduled for Saturday, 31 July.
Gazza, who advocates for open talks around mental health issues, admitted in a statement that he is not in a good place emotionally.
“My mind, spirit and energy are not in the right place to release such a personal body of work. This comes after the loss of close relatives in a short period of time.
“My heart goes out to everyone dealing with grief and mental health challenges during this pandemic. I will be using these following two weeks to focus on my family and allow my energy and spirit to get to the right place,” he said.
Gazza added that his management will keep fans up to date with developments relating to the media tour and revised release dates.
“And to the fans, friends I am yet to meet, thank you for your consistent support. Your respect for privacy during this time is highly appreciated and I can assure you will be worth the wait (sic),” he said.
GMP general manager Andreas Gustav said they decided on the two-week stretch to help them return with renewed energy.
He said this is an extremely difficult time for Gazza.
“We were ready, that is why it was such a last-minute announcement, everything was set, “he said.
Gazza is one of a handful of top artists who have in recent months broken the silence around mental health issues and the harmful cultural norms which keep people from seeking help.
In an earlier interview, the artist opened up to Unwrap.online and said he decided to meditate and deal with the loss of his parents and let go of emotional baggage and trauma.
The world over, prominent figures have made news this year by taking a bold stand to prioritise their mental health, including tennis sensation Naomi Osaka. Osaka recently declined a media interview, saying she was not mentally prepared.
This week, American gymnast Simone Biles was in the news after withdrawing from the Olympics women’s gymnastics final due to her mental health.
