Geingob appoints Nicanor as veteran’s advisor

PRESIDENT Hage Geingob has appointed former veteran affairs deputy minister Hilma Nicanor as an advisor on veterans’ affairs in the office of the vice president costing the government around N$48 000 a month.

State House press secretary Alfredo Hengari confirmed the appointment to today, saying the former deputy minister will be tasked with overseeing the coordination and implementation of veterans related policies.

Nicanor’s appointment comes a few weeks after she resigned from her deputy ministerial position to contest for National Assembly position at this month’s national elections.

She could earn around N$300 000 for the next six month before the incoming cabinet is inaugurated in March next year.

Advisors earn an annual salary around N$580 000 per year (N$48 000 per month), which is equivalent to what deputy ministers earn.

Nicanor and other 15 Swapo members resigned from their positions to ensure that the ruling party comply with the regulations set out in the Constitution and the Electoral Act.

Article 47, section 1(e) and (f) of the Constitution prohibits people who serve in the public service and those who are members of the National Council, regional councils or members of a local authority to be elected for a seat in the National Assembly.

The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) issued a directive to all political parties participating in the upcoming elections last month to comply with this regulation and make sure that candidates nominated on their lists of candidates for the National Assembly elections do not hold public office elsewhere.
