Geingob expresses disapproval of US sanctions on Cuba

President Hage Geingob has expressed his dissatisfaction with the sanctions imposed by the United States (US) on Cuba, labelling them as severe and lacking in compassion.

During the recent state visit of Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez to Namibia, Geingob said the ongoing economic blockade has hindered essential resources from reaching the people of Cuba, due to one-sided sanctions imposed on Cuba.

“Blocking of essential services, including medical supplies has had a negative effect on the health and well-being of the Cuban people,” Geingob said.

He said Namibia strongly condemns the classification of Cuba as a State Sponsor of International Terrorism by the American government.

He said Cuba will continue to be regarded by Namibia and numerous other amicable nations across the globe as a nation that advocates for international peace and unity.

“Therefore, Cuba is a sponsor of international goodwill, harmony and peace – not terrorism,” Geingob said.

The US has rationalised continuous economic sanctions against Cuba based on concerns about human rights violations, communist tendencies, and regional instability.
