Geingob honoured for academic excellence and leadership in Africa

The Africa-America Institute (AAI) has honoured former president Hage Geingob as a distinguished alumnus of the Southern African Student Programme.

The institute, in a recent statement, said Geingob’s journey from a young activist to a visionary statesman shows the transformative power of education and unwavering dedication to public service.

The AAI further said Geingob shaped the struggle against apartheid and the quest for Namibian independence.

“His pursuit of knowledge eventually led him to the United States (US), where he participated in AAl’s Southern African Student Programme. This opportunity enabled him to earn a bachelor of arts from Fordham University in 1970 and a master’s degree in international relations from the New School in 1974,” noted the institute.

The AAI highlighted that Geingob’s achievements in the US laid the foundation for his future roles as a diplomat, educator and leader.

“Upon returning to Africa, he became the founding director of the United Nations Institute for Namibia in Lusaka, Zambia, where he applied his expertise to prepare Namibians for independence.”
