Geingob responds to Ees video

PRESIDENT Hage Geingob said Kwaito artist, Eric ‘Ees’ Sell’s message on his viral video is not bad, but disagreed with his proposal to not celebrate Independence Day.

Geingob said this yesterday when he was prompted to make a statement on the video by American ambassador to Namibia, Lisa Johnson when she presented an Independence Day congratulatory letter from her president, Donald Trump.

In his video, Sell emphasised that government has spent millions of dollars on previous Independence Day celebrations and asked the President and his administration to rather spend this year’s celebration budget on cleaning the country.

Geingob said he agrees that Namibians should clean up their country but not on Independence Day.

“Choose any other day. I have already chosen a day but I cannot release it because I have to consult some people. So his views are okay – we have to clean up the country,” he said.

Geingob told Johnson that it is a plan they already had, and Sell is too late.

“Maybe they stole my idea; I don?t know,” he said jokingly.

Delivering a speech in October last year at the inauguration of the City of Windhoek building,

Geingob said he would like to set aside a day when all Namibians will roll up their sleeves and engage in a nationwide clean-up campaign.

He added that after consultations on the clean-up date, everyone should be involved all over the country.
