The Forum of German-Speaking Namibians says founding president Sam Nujoma ensured the protection of their mother tongue.
In a statement issued by chairperson Harald Hecht yesterday, the forum paid tribute to Nujoma after his death on Saturday evening.
Hecht said freedom of speech and expression being entrenched in the Constitution “paved the way for peaceful cohabitation and the continued cultural diversity in our motherland”.
He said the negotiated settlement for Namibia’s independence ensured that Namibia’s future was built on the foundations of liberty, unity and solidarity.
“Nujoma spearheaded the liberation struggle for the independence of Namibia with vision, vigour and determination for over 30 years, which earned him the highest respect and recognition locally and internationally”.
He said the former president was also instrumental in developing and implementing the policy of national reconciliation through the ‘One Namibia, One Nation’ slogan.
