Gibeon to open first fuel station in early 2025

Gibeon in the Hardap region will soon open its first fuel station, addressing a long-standing need for fuel services in the area.

Sharon Bezuidenthoudt, the chairperson of the Gibeon Village Council, on Tuesday said the facility will open early next year.

Gibeon residents currently have to travel 60km to Mariental to fill their vehicles with fuel.

“Those who are unable to make the journey themselves frequently rely on others to provide fuel for them. This arrangement results in an additional charge of N$50 for the service, which increases the expense for households,” she said.

Bezuidenthoudt said the council has made land available for the facility’s development, which will benefit both residents and passing motorists.
“The project is also expected to promote local economic activity,” she said.

Beyond the fuel station, Bezuidenthoudt mentioned several other infrastructure projects at Gibeon.

One major endeavour is the development of a sewer reticulation system.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform provided the majority of the funding for the first phase of the project, which cost N$2.4 million, while the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development has also contributed to it.

The second phase, for which N$5 million has been made available, is already underway.

Other initiatives include the reconstruction of the Gibeon stadium, while new electrical infrastructure is being built to ensure a consistent and dependable power supply, she said.

“These developments are part of a larger effort to improve Gibeon’s quality of life and promote local economic growth.

“The fuel station, in particular, is projected to fill a key service vacuum while decreasing the financial and logistical barriers that locals now encounter when purchasing fuel,” she said.

The new projects are a step forward for Gibeon as it strives to strengthen its infrastructure and meet the requirements of its residents, Bezuidenthoudt stated. – Nampa
