Girl’s body retrieved from Orange River

The body of a girl (16) was retrieved from the Orange River at Oranjemund on Sunday, in a case of suspected drowning.

//Kharas police crime coordinator Nicodemus Mbango said it was reported on Saturday that a man and a girl were driving in the vicinity of the Orange River mouth, when their car fell into the water.

Mbango said the driver reportedly managed to swim out of the water but the whereabouts of the girl were unknown at the time.

“Oranjemund Town Council firefighters and divers tried to search for the girl and the motor vehicle but they only managed to find the vehicle with no one inside.

“The divers could not continue the search after 02h00 on Saturday night due to high tides/strong sea waves and darkness deep under the water.

“They resumed the search on Sunday when she was found,” said Mbango.

The deceased has been identified as Geraldine Jonker, who was visiting Oranjemund from Gochas village in the Hardap region. Her next of kin have been informed.

The driver, identified as Samuel Joshua (30) has been admitted to Namdeb Private Hospital for treatment for shock.
