Goethe Institut Presents ‘The City’

The Goethe Institut Namibia in Windhoek will present an international photographic exhibition depicting human beings’ relationship with an environment that they created and in some cases destructed in pursuit of wealth, security and freedom.

Set to take place at the National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN) on 5 April at 20h00, the exhibition by the Ostkreuz Agency Berlin is a collaboration between the Namibia University of Science of Technology (NUST), NAGN and the College of the Arts at the Katutura Community Arts Centre (Cota/KCAC) who will also showcase the works.

A group of photographers have travelled around the world and captured moments reflecting the tone and aspirations of people making and breaking an environment in pursuit of achievement. Wealth, security and freedom is what everybody wants and pursues in a city. Urbanisation is real and does not always provide what is desired, and so people alter their environment to meet their desires or develop a tolerance to accept what cannot be changed.

From the slums in Manila to the neon lights of Las Vegas and across the Atlantic to a bus terminal in Nigeria, ‘Die Stadt – The City’ is a diverse collection of photographs that embody the easily overlooked norm and isolates it in a frame to highlight its significance in humanity’s journey toward the future.

This exhibition spans across Windhoek and serves as the opening of the countdown to Open Day on 8 April at the Goethe-Institut Namibia. Transport will be provided from the NAGN at 18h30 during the launch to the other galleries. It’ll be a week to remember.
