Government encourages eligible voters to register Statement by Emma Theofelus, minister of information and communication technology

Emma Theofelus

The government of the Republic of Namibia would like to encourage citizens to exercise their constitutionally protected right to register to vote in order to exercise their civic duty of voting in the November 2024 presidential and National Assembly elections.

In a democratic country such as Namibia, an electoral cycle is imperative as it allows eligible voters to elect leaders who will lead them for the next five years.

Therefore, I encourage every eligible voter to visit their nearest registration point and register to participate in the upcoming elections. The Electoral Commission of Namibia on 22 July 2024 revealed that 71% of eligible voters registered, and I would like the remaining 29% to step up and register to vote.

Moreover, the government would also like to encourage citizens to be alert, exercise caution and responsibly conduct themselves in this election year.

Elections are generally a contestation of ideas and all activities leading up to election day 27 November 2024 must be held in a patriotic fashion and in a manner that strengthens our democracy and not threaten it.

Our election cycle comes every five years and while various societies hold different political views, none of them should erode our nationhood, patriotism and pride in the country that we all love, Namibia.
