Governor grills labour officials in Karas Region

KARAS Governor Dawid Boois has grilled labour inspectors in the region for allegedly failing to enforce the Labour Act.

“The labour inspectors lacks commitment and experience and as a result the workers in dispute with their employees are suffering,” Boois said. “Labour relations in the region are deteriorating day by day,” he remarked.Boois made these remarks when local politicians met with Labour and Social Welfare Minister Immanuel Ngatjizeko at Keetmanshoop on Friday.Boois said recent strikes at Skorpion Zinc Mine and the Namibian Development Corporation (NDC) were evidence of unhealthy labour relations in the region. The Governor also expressed concern over the scorching sun and wintry weather that pensioners have to endure while waiting in long queues for their pension payouts. He appealed to the Minister for more pay points to improve this situation.Ngatjizeko acknowledged that enforcement of the Labour Act was a worrying factor.”What is the point of promulgating new laws and amending them if they are not enforced,” he said.Ngatjizeko said his ministry would welcome a written request for more pension pay points in the region, but would have to consider the financial implications before granting the request.”Labour relations in the region are deteriorating day by day,” he remarked.Boois made these remarks when local politicians met with Labour and Social Welfare Minister Immanuel Ngatjizeko at Keetmanshoop on Friday.Boois said recent strikes at Skorpion Zinc Mine and the Namibian Development Corporation (NDC) were evidence of unhealthy labour relations in the region. The Governor also expressed concern over the scorching sun and wintry weather that pensioners have to endure while waiting in long queues for their pension payouts. He appealed to the Minister for more pay points to improve this situation.Ngatjizeko acknowledged that enforcement of the Labour Act was a worrying factor.”What is the point of promulgating new laws and amending them if they are not enforced,” he said.Ngatjizeko said his ministry would welcome a written request for more pension pay points in the region, but would have to consider the financial implications before granting the request.
