PRESIDENT Hifikepunye Pohamba has said that the completion of the Windhoek-Okahandja Road represents another step towards development, expansion and modernisation of physical and communications infrastructure in the country.
The project, rehabilitation and upgrading to bitumen standards of a dual carriageway of Trunk Road between Windhoek and Okahandja covers 78 km and will be done in four sections. The current section three, a 10km stretch, will cost government N$240 million to rehabilitate over about 15 months starting January. An estimated 350 jobs will be created.
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony on Monday, Pohamba said the project was significant in many ways. Apart from improving the flow of traffic, the development will enhance safety since the stretch is busy and forms part of the important Walvis Bay Corridor.
“This road is a major artery for trade and commerce in our country,” the President said. “Our government has decided to mobilise resources for the upgrading of this road to a modern and safer dual carriageway, because of its strategic importance to our country.”
He further noted that the stretch between Windhoek and Okahandja has witnessed many accidents over the years because of heavy traffic and because it is used by travellers to and from the coast as well as those going to the north and north-eastern parts of the country.
The President also said he was pleased to learn that the upgrading of the road will include the construction of pedestrian bridges on the sections of the Windhoek Western Bypass, which is notorious for gruesome traffic accidents.
