The 2023 Metropolitan Gravity Cup, a unifying initiative for youth empowerment and community cohesion through sports, is set for Affies Park in Windhoek this weekend.

The school sports tournament symbolises more than just a competition; it represents the aspirations and unity of our communities. The anticipation surrounding the tournament is evident, with 39 schools and 136 teams lined up to exhibit their talent across football 6-a-side, netball, hockey 5s, and rugby 7s contests, underlining the vast range of athletic talent present within our Namibian schools.

“This tournament is more than just sports; it’s about making a lasting impact in communities across our beloved country. Investing in our youth through sports not only fosters talent but shapes the leaders of tomorrow,” said Metropolitan retail executive officer Ingah Ekandjo.

Schools were invited to submit motivations explaining why they deserved an opportunity at this event.

The ‘Blue Ticket Winners’ of this initiative enjoy an all-expenses-paid experience. Specifically, Metropolitan covers entry fees, transport, accommodation and meals for 50 individuals from the winning schools over a four-day period.

This year’s winners are Shamangorwa Secondary School (Kavango East region), Empelheim Secondary School (Hardap), Xungileni Primary School (Omusati) and Opuwo Primary School (Kunene).

“This opportunity goes beyond mere sports entertainment. It represents a holistic approach to the development of young Namibians, focusing not just on physical aptitude but on overall personal growth,” said Shamangorwa Combined School principal Valentines Kamenye.

“It fills us with immense pride to be the first school from the Kavango East region to be acknowledged in such a manner. Our heartfelt thanks extend to Metropolitan for recognising and nurturing the potential in our students.”

Spectators can expect over 300 matches from under-13 to under-19 categories. The public is encouraged to witness a display of talent, dedication, and sportsmanship.

“The Metropolitan Gravity Cup represents the spirit of dedication, passion and unity among our youth. Collaborating with Metropolitan, we aim to provide a platform for young athletes to emerge as stars, bringing communities closer in the process,” said Shaun Powell of Gravity Sportswear and Nutrition, the official organisers of the event.

Co-sponsors include Top Score, Namib Poultry, Nashua Namibia, Gravity Live, Indongo Toyota and Click Internet.
