Heroes’ Day preparations going well – Ausiku

PREPARATIONS for the commemoration of Heroes Day at Nkurenkuru on 26 August are progressing well, Kavango West governor Sirkka Ausiku has said.

The governor said in an interview with Nampa that the Kavango West region is looking forward to hosting the national event. “We do not have a sports stadium yet, so the preparatory committee is looking at holding the event on a plot the Nkurenkuru Town Council has allocated to the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service for the construction of a sports stadium and a multi-purpose centre,” she explained.

The other possible venue which the committee is considering is the regional government office park site. Ausiku said the two sites are in the same vicinity, and the technical sub-committees will assess both and advise the preparatory committee accordingly.

Asked if there is enough accommodation at Nkurenkuru and its surroundings for visitors, the governor said although accommodation facilities are few in the region, they are preparing to make everyone’s stay memorable. “Visitors who cannot find accommodation at Nkurenkuru can stay in neighbouring towns like Rundu in Kavango East, Tsumeb in Oshikoto and Okongo in the Ohangwena region,” she added.

Heroes’ Day commemorations are to honour Namibian heroes and heroines, some of whom are still alive, for their contributions and sacrifices for Namibia’s independence from apartheid South Africa. The liberation war began on 26 August 1966 at Omugulugwombashe in the Omusati region.
