Paulus ‘The Hitman’ Moses is “not happy” with the manner in which his fight against Argentinian Jorge Rodriguez ended at the Healao Nafidi Centre in Omafo on Saturday/Sunday.
Moses was declared the winner of the WBO International lightweight title Xmas Boxing Bonanza main event in the fourth round after an accidental clash of heads left Rodriguez, which left the South American with a deep gash oozing blood above his left eye and unable to continue the contest.
While he appreciates defending his intermediary title, Moses said he would have preferred to do it in style.
“I’m not happy to win like this. I wanted to win with a knockout,” Moses told reporters after the fight meant to enhance his cause for a shot at the world title.
Nonetheless, the victory was deserved, he added.
“The guy was not fighting. He was running and then this thing happened just when I was starting to get him.
“Now we have to wait and see what happens. I don’t make the decisions. It’s up to the boxing authorities and the world champion to decide if I’ll go for the world title or not,” said Moses, who improved his record to 35 wins against one defeat.
Compatriot Paulus ‘The Rock’ Ambunda clung to his IBF/WBA International titles with a close split decision call over the impressive Tshifiwa Munyai of South Africa.
Munyai can feel hard done by after taking the fight to the former WBO world champion and indeed appearing to have gotten the better him.
However, the judges ruled in Ambunda’s favour, scoring the fight 113-116; 115-112; and 112-117.
Ambunda appeared in cruise control in the first two rounds, as an initially nervous challenger went down thrice in the first round, first through a blow to the midriff and then subsequently to stumbles through incessant pressure from the holder.
However, Munyai recovered impressively to dominate the next couple of rounds and forcing Ambunda to slug it out thereafter.
In the end, Ambunda was seen to have done enough to merit the win by the judges.
Meanwhile, Vikapita Meroro’s WBO Africa cruiserweight title fight against Zimbabwean Tineyi Maridzo was called off after both fighters allegedly failed to make the required weight for the 90,7kg division contest.
Meroro tipped the scale at 95,35kg, rendering him overweight, while Maridzo came in at 79,8kg, which is below-weight.
In earlier fights, Nataniel Kakololo beat Daniel Hosea by unanimous decision in a lightweight bout; super bantamweight Gabriel Johannes lost to Jonas Mateus on points; Johannes Mathias lost to Isaak Anyala in a featherweight bout on a second round TKO; Mike Shonena won by unanimous decision against Silas Mandeya from Zimbabwe in a welterweight contest; Nathaniel Kamati beat South African super bantamweight Thembani Hobyane by unanimous decision; while junior welterweight Immanuel Mungandjela beat Mathias Shimbi by TKO in round two.
