House of Nalo Keeps Growing

Accessories are all about expression. Some opt to stand out with unique statement pieces, while others prefer something more subtle and laid back.

House of Nalo, owned by Alba Hamukwaya also known as DJ Alba, who is one of Namibia’s best DJs and music producers, recently released their third accessories line, titled ‘Season 3’.

Hamukwaya says the new collection offers a taste of what is to come.

“My new work is basically an addition to the ‘Glam and Bridal Collection’ that we launched late last year. We used rhinestones to create elegant pieces like a rhinestone choker, adding more items for the ladies to the collection,” said Hamukwaya.

“We are doing this because we are trying to keep a balance between items for men and women. We started off with bracelets for men and we are trying to cater for both genders because we don’t want anyone feeling left out.”

House of Nalo recently turned three years old, something that the Ongwediva-born creative is very proud and excited about.

“I am happy that we keep growing,” she said.

Making her mark in both music and business is certainly not easy, and Hamukwaya says consistency is key.

“I think I got to where I am today through hard work. My motto in life is to never ever waste any time worrying about what you can’t change.”

She strives to attain the perfect balance between her music and House of Nalo, which she manages to do as most of her gigs are on weekends, leaving ample time to work on House of Nalo during the week.

“Believe it or not but music and architecture are some of the biggest influencers of my designs.”

She said she also draws inspiration from people she looks up to such as her mother, sister, DJ Juicy M, DJ LeSoul, Black Coffee and AKA.

“I have so many people because they all have something different that I admire, from the way they handle life in general to how they build their brands,” she said.

Whenever she is not working, Hamukwaya loves reading and meditation, which she says helps maintain her emotional and mental health.

The 28-year-old entrepreneur describes herself as shy and reserved.

“Growing up I was the type of girl who played with both toy cars and dolls. I enjoyed playing soccer with the boys and netball with the girls. I am what people call a tomboy and I believe that is why I did not find it particularly difficult to fit into male-dominated DJing when I started. I felt at home right away,” she said.
