A GROUP of civil servants occupying Government houses at Lüderitz are accusing the Works Department of ‘hijacking’ the sale of houses under the Government alienation scheme.
They claim Government houses have been sold under the scheme countrywide, but not at Lüderitz. Speaking on behalf of the tenants, Katrina Kennedy claimed several letters to the Works Department to speed up the selling of Government houses have fallen on deaf ears. Kennedy further claimed that tenants were forced live in ‘unbearable conditions,’ because the houses are ‘falling apart’ because of a lack of maintenance. ‘We experience continuous leaking of underground pipes. As a result of leaking underground pipes my water bill with the local Town Council presently stands at N$6 000,’ said Kennedy. The acting regional head of the Works Department, Christiaan Heydt, said the sale of Government houses at the town was delayed because houses had not been valuated yet.
