Hundreds take up ECN vehicle offer

Hundreds of Windhoekers who own bakkies flocked to the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN)’s head office on Friday to offer their cars to be utilised in the upcoming supplementary registration of voters (SRV), scheduled for 8 to 27 July.

ECN chairperson Notemba Tjipueja announced on Thursday that they could not acquire the required number of vehicles which they targeted from the government, and therefore devised a second plan to addres the shortfall.

“The ECN required a total number of 856 vehicles to be assigned to the registration officials. But as I speak, the ECN has been able to secure 712 government vehicles, leaving a shortfall of 144 vehicles,” she said.

In alleviating the vehicle shortage, they resorted to contracting private citizens with suitable vehicles to assist in the transportation of officials and registration material during the upcoming process, Tjipueja added.

Speaking to Nampa on Friday, ECN Windhoek North supervisor, who identified himself as S T Haufiku, said they registered 104 vehicles which will be tested for fitness to see if they qualify for the operation.

He stressed that each car owner should be available at all times when needed during the registration period.

“The drivers of the cars must have their phones on at all times, and be ready to work at all times,” he added.

Haufiku said failure to show up for work for a single day may lead to the disqualification of the vehicle without any compensation to the owner.

ECN chief electoral officer Theo Mujoro informed the media on Thursday that the owners of 4×4 vehicles will be paid N$1 200 per day, while 2×4 car owners will receive N$1 000 per day for their services.
