Icelandic fishing company dismisses fake press release

Icelandic fishing company dismisses fake press release

Icelandic fishing company Samherji has dismissed fake press releases that were allegedly sent to foreign media outlets.

In a brief statement on the company’s website, it noted that unknown parties have been using the company’s name.

“The same parties also appear to have established a fake website under the company’s name, hosted in the UK, and simultaneously distributed fake advertising banners.

“It is important to note that neither the website nor the press release has any connection to Samherji or its employees. This seems to be a deliberate attack that the company takes very seriously. Samherji will be requesting the removal of the fake website,” the statement reads.

Samherji is the company accused of paying bribes to Namibian politicians in exchange for fishing quotas. The Fishrot scandal, which was exposed in 2019, involves politicians, businessmen, and lawyers accused of bribery and corruption involving millions derived from Namibia’s fishing industry.
