Independence Avenue promises entertainment galore

While most people went to the villages, farms and reserves for a well-deserved festive season break, Windhoek is buzzing with excitement tonight.

As the City of Windhoek hosts its popular annual New Year Celebration at their head office on Independence Avenue, starting on Tuesday and continuing into the early hours of New Year’s Day, similar shows are set for other towns around the country.

Gone are the days when the likes of kwaito stars like Gazza, The Dogg (now known as King Tee Dee), Sunnyboy and Matongo Family used to dominate events, as organisers have opted for more inclusivity in recent years.

Tonight’s show will see the return of lyricist Qonja, popularly known as Mdakadaka, who was an influential kwaito artist during his heyday.

The ‘Koek n Jam’ hitmaker, who also gifted Namibians exciting songs like ‘The Good Life’, ‘My Piecey My Tunjie’, ‘Take You Home’, ‘Riek Die Jol’, ‘Tete Tete’ and ‘Swagger Skit’, will roll back the years when he takes to the stage after an extended musical ‘sabbatical’.

Also headlining tonight’s spectacle is the popular music duo Ethnix, which is rapidly growing in stature since introducing themselves to the Namibian music scene in 2020.

With hits like ‘Kaboy’, ‘Tanauka’, ‘Natalia’ ‘Easy Jealousy’ ‘Ohole So Nice, and ‘Open Up’ – which is probably their biggest hit – Ethnix have built a large fan base.

Also poised to provide the thrills is ‘Skippa’ hitmaker Kaptein Tswazi who is also known for his outrageous stage performances.

The New Year Celebration bash has also attracted other big name stars like the electrifying Marv Town who has taken the ma /gaisa genre to another level with his monster hit /Gurisen. Marv Town is also slated for another New Year’s Eve bash at Klippies Sports Bar at Mariental at around 23h00 tonight.

Tonight’s line-up at City of Windhoek also includes Oteya, formerly of duo Gal Level, who is expected to shake and sing – meeting the expectations of Namibian fans.

Himba Boi and Savanah Afro’s Band, Minister Pride, Nally, TKB, Yeesir and Chester House Prince are the other artists lined up for the Independence Avenue gig.
