Independence celebrations head to Tsumeb

THIS year’s independence celebrations will be held at Tsumeb, the ministry of information announced today.

Permanent secretary Mbeuta Ua-Ndjarakana said President Hage Geingob has directed that the 28th independence celebrations be held at Tsumeb on 21 March.

“Preparations for Independence Day celebrations have started, and further information will be communicated in due course,” Ua-Ndjarakana said.

Some sectors of public had earlier appealed for government not to stage this year’s celebrations in order to cut cost.

Such celebrations can cost anything between N$5 million (low key event) and N$20 million.

In 2015, when President Geingob was inaugurated, the cost went up to N$20 million.

This year’s event falls in the low key bracket but with the current economic challenges facing the country, some have appealed for government not to go ahead with the celebrations.
