Independent presidential candidates given 24-hour extension to register for polls

The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has given independent candidates an additional 24 hours to submit the required number of signatures.

The ECN on Wednesday rejected the submissions of Jeremia Kaambo, Ally Angula and Elsie Chen during a public sitting to formally accept the nominations and announce the candidates and political parties duly nominated.

Angula told The Namibian on Wednesday the ECN reasoned that the independent candidates did not have enough signatures.

“We sat until 02h00 to capture the signatures. But we are happy for the extra 24 hours to rectify this,” she said.

The independent candidates are expected back at the ECN on Thursday morning at 09h00 for their final submissions.
