THE lack of police stations in the Khomas Region, inadequate human capital and resources, as well as ill-discipline among members remain major challenges faced by the Namibian Police.
Police Inspector General, Lieutenant General Sebastian Ndeitunga made these remarks during the appointment of the new Regional Commander for the Khomas Region.
Commissioner Desiderius Ireneus Shilunga is the new Khomas Regional Commander, succeeding Festus Shilongo, who took up a position as head of security at the Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) in Walvis Bay late last year.
Ndeitunga said the management of the Namibian Police Force is aware of the challenge of limited police stations in the Khomas Region.
“Windhoek only has three Class A police stations – the Wanaheda, Katutura and Windhoek Police Stations – which are expected to cater for the large populace of the city,” he said.
Ndeitunga noted that this challenge was presented to the central government, and a budgetary provision was made to establish a few more police stations within the capital.
“We will, however, continue to engage our government to avail more resources to ensure that the safety and security of our country is not compromised,” he promised.
He further said policing countrywide is coupled with many challenges, and the Khomas Region is no exception. “These are inter-alia the lack of human capital and other resources such as means of transport, accommodation, and technical and other office equipment. Therefore, these limited resources must be optimally utilised to effectively and efficiently deliver service to our people, and in this case, to the people in the great Khomas Region,” said Ndeitunga.
The Inspector-General added that service delivery should be improved at all levels, and highlighted that ill-discipline is another challenge faced by the Force.
“One of the main responsibilities of these appointed and promoted Police Regional Commanders is to instill discipline among members of the Force, vigorously address ill-discipline and to intensify supervision at all levels of service delivery,” he said.
