Ireland win Mini Hockey World Cup

Ireland, represented by St Paul’s College, won the Mini World Cup hockey tournament that took place at the Doc Jubber fields in Olympia on Saturday.

The Mini World Cup has developed into one of the top developmental hockey tournaments in Namibia and took place for the 14th successive year.

More than 500 junior players from Windhoek and the coast participated in Under-8, u10, u12 and u14 age groups, with the participating schools representing various countries as has become tradition in the Mini World Cup.

St Paul’s represented Ireland, St Georges represented Greece, Pro Ed Academy from Swakopmund represented Jamaica, Walvis Bay Primary School represented Portugal, Pioniers Park Primary represented China and Windhoek Gymnasium represented Egypt. A team made up of players from Katutura and Khomasdal also entered and represented Belgium.

Ireland were the overall winners, followed by Egypt and Greece, while Egypt won the Ambassadorial trophy for best depicting the culture and decor of its country.

The Russel Bartlett team award was won by the Ireland u12 girls team while the various age group medallists were as follows:

Girls u10:

1 Ireland 2 Portugal 3 Egypt

1 Ireland 2 Belgium 3 China

The tournament was once again organised by K5 while Coca-Cola was the main sponsor. There were several other sponsors including Ricoh, Waltons, Impact, Spar, Hartlief, Plastic Packaging, Avi, Timco Butchery and Mello Foods.
