RIO DE JANEIRO – Paralympic sprinter Lahja Ishitile and her guide Sam Shimanda did not progress to the next round of the women’s T11, 400m race at the Paralympic Games despite setting a new African record.
The 2016 Paralympic Games that started on 07 September are currently underway in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Ishitile and Shimanda ran a time of 58.97 seconds, which was an African record, but they finished second in heat one behind Simplicio da Silva of Brazil and her guide Felipe Veloso.
Only the heat winner and the fastest loser from the four heats progressed to the final that takes place Friday morning.
Ishitile’s time was the sixth fastest from the four heats and did therefore not progress to the next round.
Meanwhile, gold and bronze medallist Ananias Shikongo will on Friday compete in the heats of the men’s T11, 400m at 22h48 Namibian time.
The major international multi-sport event involves athletes with a range of disabilities and is governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
Team Namibia has thus far won four medals at the games. Shikongo has won two medals – gold and bronze in the men’s T11 200m and 100m, while Johannes Nambala won two silver medals in the men’s T13, 100 and 400m. – Nampa
