Johannes Dohren Roman Catholic High School held their annual prize giving ceremony on 10 October in the Omaheke Region, honouring their hard working pupils.
Winners received certificates, trophies and money to take home which provided some incentive for those pupils who did not score high marks to work harder in future.
The school, which is located at Dornfeld Farm, is situated 17 kilometres east from Gobabis at the Dornfeld Mission. It was founded by Friar Johannes Dohren, an Oblate of Mary Immaculate (OMI) which is a Catholic missionary group. His vision was to ‘give a holistic education for the (disadvantaged) farm children’ while simultaneously ‘addressing all aspects of a human being’.
Bianca Dax, a teacher at the school, expressed the importance of having prize-giving ceremonies at school. “I would say that it’s not only to award pupils for their outstanding academic work but it’s a motivation to the pupils, as they become more reluctant to succeed.
“It encourages pupils who did not receive any prizes to study harder next time as there’s always a second chance and it’s never too late. It also proves that hard work pays off.”
The best academic achievers include Fritz Fritz (Grade 8), Johannes Kharigub (Grade 9), Unomasa Kazonguizi (Grade 10), Lisa Leberki (Grade 11) and Marvin Goreseb (Grade 12).
The Junior Victrix Award (Best Performer in the Junior phase: Grade 8 to 10) went to Unomasa Kazonguizi while the Senior Victrix Award (Best Performer in the Senior phase: Grade 11 to 12) was awarded to Marvin Goreseb. The Dux Learner for the overall school was Unomasa Kazonguizi.
Other pupils also received prizes in various subjects.
