Jomolizo Making Music for the People

Born Moses Halweendo in the Onekwaya settlement in the Ohangwena region, Jomolizo is a musician who understands what the masses like and has been delivering that throughout his music career.

With his latest offering ‘Kaandjetu’ receiving major airplay on radio and on jukeboxes, this musician has set his sights high and is keen on trying his luck at the upcoming Namibia Annual Music Awards (NAMAs).

“I entered for the NAMAs, yes, and do hope to win. You must always have positive energy with these things,” he told The Weekender in a recent interview.

This talented musician, who finished high school at St Mary’s High School at Odibo, is a former soccer player who got his stage name from his days on the field.

Until 2009, he worked as a producer and had not yet seen himself as a musician. “My sister encouraged me to become a musician and my first single was called ‘Sisi Wami’, which was a love song,” he said.

Jomolizo’s previous singles may have been good but none as big as his current hit, ‘Kaandjetu’ The song, he said, came to him in a dream and putting it together after that was not hard to do.

“It was like a dream. I woke up in the middle of the night, made the beat and the next day I wrote the song.” What followed, he said, was the decision to bring in a female voice to complete the song and its message. ‘Kaandjetu’ is a cheeky song about a young couple in love who are ready to get married and start a life together with the man promising to take his partner ‘kaandjetu’, which loosely translates to ‘our home’.

The song features the voice of Liina.

Recently signed to Deal Done Records, Jomolizo is already working on his next album which he hopes will be released by May.

The new album will feature the likes of Afro-pop sensation Tequila as well as rapper Stunner, amongst other acts.

Describing his music as traditional infused with dancehall and Afro-pop, Jomolizo is confident in the fact that his music appeals to a wide range of people and the message behind his songs is what draws most to listen to his work.

“My music helps people to learn the most important things in life, what to do and what to focus on more in life,” he said.
