Junior cricket teams leave for SA

SEVEN Namibian junior cricket teams leave for South Africa over the next few days to compete in various age group tournaments.

The teams’ capping ceremonies took place last Friday where the president of Cricket Namibia Dr Rudie van Vuuren addressed the children and conveyed the importance of sportsmanship and discipline while on tour.

Namibia’s new national cricket coach Pierre de Bruyn also addressed the children and reiterated the importance and pride of playing for their country.

The national u19 team will compete in the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week in Cape Town from December 16 to 20.

The tournament will serve as an important warm up competition for the World Cup u19 African qualifier that Namibia will host from 15 to 24 March next year.

Next year’s World Cup u19 African qualifier will see Namibia hosting five countries, namely Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Sierra Leone and Nigeria who will battle it out for one spot at hr 2020 u19 World Cup to be staged in South Africa.

The Namibian team is captained by Shaun Fouche and coached by former senior national coach Dee Thakur and includes numerous players who have been shining on the local club circuit like Jan Izak de Villiers, Matthew de Gouveia, Gerhard Lottering, Mauritius Ngupita, Ben Shikongo, Dian Neethling and Nicol Loftie-Eaton, who has already represented Namibia’s senior team.

The Namibian u17 team will compete in the South African Interprovincial tournament in Welkom from 9 to 13 December and will be captained by Xavier van Wyk and coached by John Heynes.

The Namibian u15 A team, which will compete in the Momentum u15 Cricket Week in Stellenbosch from 7 to 11 December, is captained by Divan La Cock and coached by Lauritz Haccou.

Haccou will also coach the u15 B team that is captained by Dylan Leicher and will compete in the Interprovincial Rural Cricket Festival in Sasolburg.

The Namibian u13 team, that will compete in the De Tuinen Cricket Festival in Worcester from 13 to 17 December, is captained by Jack Parker and coached by Justus Hangala, while the Namibia u13 b team which will also compete in Worcester, is captained by Zacheo Jansen van Rensburg and coached by Mika Mutumbe.

The Namibian u12 team that will compete in the South African T20 Youth Cricket Festival in Cape Town from 17 to 20 December is captained by Waldo Human and coached by Lauritz Haccou.
