PRIME Minister Nahas Angula has praised young people in the Karas Region for taking responsibility for the region’s development initiatives.
Officiating at the recent launch of the Insight Karas (IK) newsletter at Keetmanshoop, Angula said “the youth in the region are positioned to take charge”. He urged community leaders to continue their support of youth development initiatives.”The struggle for economic empowerment and policy formulation should feature prominently in our development agendas with the youth as the primary target,” he said.Angula encouraged the private and public sectors to financially boost the new regional newsletter by placing regular advertisements in it.He warned the youth against “fly-by-night” projects.”With the exemplary leadership, courageous ownership drive and commitment shown by the region’s youth, I hope this newsletter project is here to stay forever,” he added.Speaking at the same event, youth activist Annalien van Wyk, who spearheaded the establishment of the newsletter, said its main objective was to focus on development issues within the region.Van Wyk claimed that the mass media in the country focused too much on propaganda and overlooked development issues. She said the establishment of the newsletter should be seen as an idea of young people striving towards success.”We are committed, determined and ready to reach greater heights,” she said. The newsletter’s second objective was to advocate media literacy among the youth, Van Wyk said. The Deputy Minister of Youth Sports and Culture, Pohamba Shifeta, and Karas Governor Dawid Boois, who is the patron of the newsletter, also attended the launch.Boois and the Prime Minister’s office pledged N$5 000 each for the project. In total N$35 000 was pledged.
