A 39-year-old man died after he was run over by a train at Karibib on Monday morning.

The man, identified by police as Ronnie Rodney //Hoëbeb, was reportedly sleeping on the railway line near Engen Service Station when the incident occurred at 02h27.

According to the Erongo police spokesperson, inspector Ileni Shapumba, the victim was allegedly run over by the train and died at the scene.

“It is suspected that the deceased was sleeping on the railway when the train was passing,” Shapumba said, adding that upon realising what had happened, the train operator stopped the train, but it was too late. The victim had already succumbed to his injuries.

//Hoëbeb was an employee at the Shell Service Station and he had reported for his duty the previous evening, but reportedly left shortly thereafter to rest at home. It remains unclear how //Hoëbeb ended up sleeping on the railway line.

The next-of-kin have been informed and investigations are continuing.
