Karnataka’s Namibian tour got off to a great start on Friday when they thumped Namibia by nine wickets in their first 50-over match.
Namibia were bundled out for 171 which never proved a problem for Karnataka’s top order batsmen as they reached the target for the loss of one wicket with 14 overs to spare.
Karnataka won the toss and sent Namibia in to bat, a decision which soon reaped dividends as Niko Davin was dismissed for 1 off Vidwath Kaverappa’s bowling.
Kaverappa also dismissed Michael van Lingen for 5, and although Shaun Fouche and Gerhard Erasmus tried to rebuild the innings, Namibia lost regular wickets against some accurate bowling, although Namibia’s batters were also guilty of some injudicious shots.
Fouche went for 24, Erasmus for 31 and when Michau du Preez was out for 5, Namibia were five down with only 83 on the board.
Jan Frylinck led a middle order revival, but he received little support, with only Zane Green (18) reaching double figures.
Frylinck, however, expertly guided the lower order, scoring 57 runs off 61 balls before the whole team was out for 171.
Kaverappa was Karnataka’s top bowler, taking four wickets for 16 runs off 8,1 overs, while Rishi Bopanna took 3/34 of nine.
Captain Ravikumar Samarth and LR Chethan gave Karnataka a great start as they put on 61 runs off only 10 overs before Frylinck dismissed Chethan for 37, but Nikin Jose joined Samarth as they comfortably chased down the target with an unbroken 111-run partnership.
Samarth remained not out on 78 off 100 balls (8×4), while Jose was not out on 56 off 77 balls (2×4).
