OUTGOING Minister of Mines and Energy, Isak Katali is preparing to be a full-time farmer and at the same time an active member of the Swapo Party.
Katali, who failed to make it on the 77-member Swapo Party list, will leave office soon ahead of the swearing-in of the new government on Independence Day.
In an interview with Nampa last Wednesday, Katali indicated that he will go to the North where he grew up to concentrate on farming.
“I am a village man and I have a farm. I need to sustain myself and create employment, but I will remain a member of the Swapo Party,” he said.
Katali stressed that he will be available to participate in any political activities and other assignments as directed by the political leadership.
He also makes himself available to do community work and help others in the country as required.
Katali was born on 5 January 1958 at Eunda in Omusati region.
He worked as a mining supervisor at Consolidated Diamond Mines (CDM) at Oranjemund from 1979 to 1985.
He previously served as an acting school principal, acting deputy principal and teacher at Onesi Combined School from 1987-1995.
Katali – a qualified teacher – worked as senior education officer at the Ondangwa West regional office from 1995 to 2000.
He was later appointed by Founding President Sam Nujoma as deputy minister of lands, from 2000 to 2010.
Katali was promoted to minister of mines in March 2010 by President Hifikepunye Pohamba. He has been a member of the National Assembly since 2000.
He holds the following qualifications: Masters degree in Education from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa (1998-2001); a Bachelor of Education (Hons) degree from the University of Bristol, UK (1988-90), a Diploma in Educational Management and Administration, Moray House College of Education, Edinburgh, UK (1985-1986). – Nampa
