Katima abattoir faces storage and marketing challenges

Agriculture, water and land reform deputy minister Anna Shiweda says the Katima Mulilo abattoir’s cattle intake is limited by storage availability, as well as marketing challenges.

She was speaking after a visit to the Katima Mulilo abattoir on Thursday.

According to Shiweda, despite farmers being eager to sell their livestock, the abattoir is forced to wait until it has sold products from the previous cattle intake in order to create space.

She said the processed products are not sold immediately and as a result they currently have tonnes of meat products from previous intakes in storage.

“The abattoir is an A-class. As such, it has buyers from Angola and Ghana, but they do not order as we hope they would. This meat can also be sold beyond the veterinary cordon fence if all the protocols are followed correctly.

The marketing issue experienced will be addressed accordingly with the assistance of the government,” she said.

The abattoir has two chillers that can store 110 cattle per week, two plate freezers that store 420 boxes and two holding freezers that can store 7 500 boxes.
