Katutura casualty ward moved

THE Katutura State Hospital Casualty Department has been transferred to the Windhoek Central Hospital (WCH) while renovation work – which started on Monday – is carried out.

The renovations are expected to be completed by June this year. Senior Medical Superintendent Dr Helena Nkandi-Shiimi told Nampa: “We have planned this for quite some time now.

Several meetings were held with all stakeholders on the renovation and the moving of the casualty department to the Windhoek Central Hospital.

I think the community has understood the message”.

She said the ward at the WCH was not as spacious as the previous ward.

As a result the observation period for patients would be reduced.

This would result in some patients being sent home in less than a day if they were assessed as being well, as there was limited space, she added.

Nkandi-Shiimi said there was likely to be an upsurge in admissions at the end of the month when many accidents normally took place.

“We are normally used to handling many casualties at month ends and public holidays,” she said.

But she was confident that her staff could deal with the situation.
