Kavango East police recover stolen drought relief items worth N$34 000

Police in the Kavango East region arrested a 48-year-old man last Friday for alleged possession of maize meal and cooking oil suspected to have been stolen from thr government’s drought relief programme.

Police crime investigations coordinator in the region deputy commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu on Wednesday said the suspect was found while selling the 247 bags of maize meal (10kg each) and 47 bottles of cooking oil (750ml) at Shimpanda village.

The items valued at N$34 150 were recovered and are being kept at the Rundu Police Station as part of the investigation.

“The accused, Petrus Mashiyange, made his first appearance in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Monday. He appeared before magistrate Sonia Sampofu who denied him bail,” Kanyetu said.

The case was postponed to 11 April for formal bail application.
