The Namibian Police at Keetmanshoop in the //Kharas region have cordoned off the town’s police station in anticipation of the end of a regional council by-election in the Keetmanshoop Rural constituency.

//Kharas police regional commander Marius Katamila said on Monday that the police station has been cordoned off to provide security for the arrival of sensitive material from the Keetmanshoop Rural constituency by-election.

Katamila said the police would not allow any person to take advantage of an opportunity to storm the police station when election materials arrive there.

“You are aware that there is an election under way. You will also recall that various political party supporters invaded this police station over the weekend,” he said.

“There were allegations made on tampering with election sensitive material. Investigations found that the allegations were baseless. However, I don’t believe it was due to ill intent, supporters only acted on information that was available to them,” said Katamila.

He emphasised that no human life is being placed under threat.

Electoral Commission of Namibia deputy director of democracy building Marilyn Kazetjikuria said once polling stations close at 21h00, counting would be conducted at each voting venue.

“Thereafter all the ballot boxes will be transported to the Aroab constituency office for collating and the announcement of the winning candidate,” said Kazetjikuria.

Residents of Keetmanshoop Rural constituency went to the polls on Monday to elect a new regional councillor after a vacancy occurred with the expulsion of Landless People’s Movement regional councillor Gerrit Witbooi by his party in February.
