//Kharas records increase in car crash fatalities

The police in the //Kharas region have recorded an increase in car crash fatalities during the 2024/2025 festive season compared to the same period a year prior, moving from one case to 11.

The 2024/2025 festive season campaign started on 18 November 2024 and ended on 5 January 2025.

//Kharas police crime investigations coordinator deputy commissioner Nicodemus Mbango on Friday said during the 2024-2025 period, the police also recorded an in increase in serious injuries from two to 11, while minor injuries decreased from six in the preceding festive period to two in the 2024/2025 festive season.

Mbango said there was an increase in murder cases from zero since 2021 to three murder cases recorded in the recently-concluded festive season.

The police recorded three attempted murder cases, 28 assault cases, 15 domestic violence cases, two rape cases and 25 robbery cases.

The commissioner attributed the increase in murder, assault, robbery and attempted murder cases to the increase of gangsterism, especially at Keetmanshoop, as well as the issue of alcohol and drug abuse.

Mbango indicated there was a decrease in housebreaking cases from 19 in the previous festive period to 16 in the 2024/2025 festive season.

“I believe this is because of police visibility that housebreaking cases have decreased. Even most of those reported here at Keetmanshoop were in the location, and they happen during the day when the owners of the houses were at work,” he added.

On traffic matters, the police executed 29 warrants of arrest and 30 people were arrested for drunk driving.

Police issued fines totaling N$277 800 during the 2024/2025 festive season, compared to N$346 700 in the previous year.
