Khomas High LRCs give to CAN

The 2013 Learners Representative Council (LRC) of the Khomas High School donated N$1 126,55 to the Cancer Association of Namibia last week Thursday, 14 November.

Khomas High School head girl and City of Windhoek junior mayor, Emma Theofelus, said that the initiative to donate to the cancer association was inspired by their coordinating teachers request for the LRC to support the fight against cancer.

“It all started with our LRC coordinating teacher. She wanted us to render our support to the association, so we decided to let all the learners on 31 October wear anything pink. Everybody who wore it then paid an amount that we collected for the association.

It is not a lot but we hope it will make a change,” Theofelus said.

She added that the LRC did research at their school and saw that the learners do not know much about cancer and thus they decided to also concentrate on educating fellow learners especially since more and more young people are affected by cancer.

“We have seen the importance of educating our fellow learners about cancer,” she said

Cancer Association of Namibia Projects head Liandra Grobler humbly received the donation and thanked the learners for the generous amount. She said that the association appreciates the involvement of the young people.

“It is really wonderful to see such young people involved. It is not about the amount, and it is a big amount, but the idea and every cent counts even if it is just N$50- every cent counts,” Grobler said.

Theofelus added that the LRC also has plans to visit the Acacia house to donate clothes and other necessities. Fellow LRC member, Rachel Angula said that their donation also serves as a means to create awareness on cancer in the country.

“This donation is to not only to give to the cancer patients but also to create awareness about cancer and supporting the fight against cancer,” Angula said.

The learners were very keen to get on board with any other projects by the cancer association. Grobler said she is very excited about working with the group on other projects especially because the association wants to get the youth involved as much as possible.
