A group of Khorixas residents demonstrated against alleged police negligence, which they claim contributed to the murder of Sylvia Tatamigu Gorases.
The demonstrators handed over a petition at the local magistrate’s court as well as the Khorixas police station. Gorases is said to have sought assistance from local police and the magistrate’s court as she allegedly lived in fear of her life.
“What hurt us the most that an innocent life got lost which is totally avoidable,” Elizabeth Geises, the group spokesperson said.
Geises said women in the community are now living in fear of what could happen to them at the hands of men who are supposed to protect them.
She called on law enforcement agencies to be more committed to performing their duties.
According to the petition, Gorases and her family visited the local police station and the magistrates offices repeatedly to seek justice for constant harassment and threats from the accused person to no avail.
She was later murdered, allegedly by her ex-boyfriend at her home.
The residents as such demanded that the alleged negligence of police officers be investigated.
They want an intensive probe into how murder accused Arnold Kamseb was given bail after allegedly raping his biological son.
Prosecutor Penda Hamunyela and Khorixas acting station commander Richard Sipilanyambe both said they will send the petition over to the relevant authorities. Arnold Kamseb appeared in court this week Monday and was denied bail. He is remanded in custody until his next appearance on 3 March.
