Being young and multi-talented seems to be the new world order in Namibian entertainment. King Gucci, our resident Instagram comedian, is hoping to prove this and inspire countless others to pursue their dreams, via his newfound love and entertainment venture: Making music.
Something he never dreamed of doing, has become a passion thanks to support from those around him, his constant exposure to local artists and an unwavering spirit.
“I’ve always been a dancer, so I’ve been vibing to a lot of different music for a long time, and it really helped me develop and grow a passion for it.”
It was a chance encounter with a friend, playing around and free styling over beats on YouTube, that was the birth of King Gucci ‘the musician’.
His friend suggested recording the spontaneous hook in a studio and then encouraged further, he decided to shoot a video and release his first ever musical attempt late last year.
The reaction to his debut was polarised. Not a lot of people were expecting the online sensation to make that particular move. He was always known for producing humorous skits or posting dance videos to his favourite songs.
Many found the uptempo jam cool and catchy, and the accompanying visuals by Imagination Studios helped solidify his budding status as a pop star. Others weren’t quite impressed and many online critics beckoned him to stick to being funny.
“When I released the video there was so much tension and negativity from so many people I knew. I could feel it. Luckily I find it easy to ignore such things,” he says, unfazed by the negativity.
“I don’t really consider what others say. Most of the time people are focused on themselves. What if you change yourself for someone and they don’t even notice or care?”
And now, with over 84 000 YouTube views, his name and photo on countless event posters and two additional songs released (‘Gucci Boy’, a high tempo Afro-pop jam, and ‘Falling’, a love ballad), he is truly cementing himself in the industry.
So far he has seen how different things are from the perspective of a musician and believes there are many upsides to his newfound journey.
“I like that I really get to see people’s true colours. How some are threatened by talent and how others embrace new talent. Plus I love that with every song I record, I get better.”
For the 21-year-old King Gucci it is something he is enjoying at the moment, though he hopes his efforts can one day translate into award recognition and respect from the industry.
Until then, the young artist wants to keep doing what he enjoys and hopes fans of his work will be inspired.
“A lot of people look up to me and I just want to inspire them to discover their talent and use it. I want to be like a mirror in this Namibian entertainment industry. I want young people to see themselves in me, and believe that if they’re multi-talented, they should go ahead and explore what they can do. Nobody is limited to anything.”
