KK Palace win Nations Cup

OSHANA Region’s King Kauluma Palace Football Club won the 2015 Tafel Lager Nations Cup on Sunday after dispatching of Young Stars 2-0 from Omusati in the final.

Fifty teams from four regions and two weekends of football culminated in Palace and Young Stars contesting Sunday’s final at the Oshakati Independence Stadium where Palace were crowned winners, thanks to goals from Isaac Banda and Andreas Tores IIndongo.

Palace were rewarded N$60 000 for their effort to add to the N$25 000 they received the previous weekend for winning the regional title.

Young Stars got N$30 000 for second place.

In the third place play-off match, Ohangwena Nampol won 3-1 on penalties following a goalless stalemate against Oshikoto’s Omuntele Warriors.

Nampol collected N$15 000, while Omuntele walked away with N$10 000 for finishing fourth.

In semifinals played on Saturday at the same venue, Young Stars beat Ohangwena Nampol 2-0 and KK Palace dismantled Omuntele Warriors 9-0 to reach the final.

KK Palace were crowned Oshana regional winners last week with an emphatic 2-0 victory over Khuse FC, while Omuntele Warriors won the Oshikoto regional leg with a 3-1 win over Onathinge United.

NFA President Frans Mbidi was impressed with the talent on display during the two weekends of the tournament.

“It was top class football action and it gave the players a platform to really bring up their A-game and the presence of national team coach Ricardo Mannetti during the last weekend of action added a different dimension as players played to impress. The players relished every match and it was encouraging to see,” he said.

Going forward Mbidi says the NFA will have to revisit the dates for the Tafel Lager Nation’s Cup to ensure that the crowds increased next year.

“It was disappointing to see so few people attending the games but we have learned some lessons in terms of timing and going forward the 2016 edition will definitely be better attended. We have to take the holidays, wedding and the English Premier League into consideration so that we can enough people to come and support the future stars of local football,” Mbidi. – nfa.org.na
