Kunene ready to fight for honours

RACE TO GLORY … The Namibian Newspaper Cup kicks off at Otjiwarongo on Friday. Photo: File

The great Kunene region is looking to end The Namibian Newspaper Cup drought at Otjiwarongo over the Easter weekend, said Bolla Nangombe.

The Kunene football administrator said the regional team has prepared with the aim of challenging the top sides, just like holders Zambezi did when claiming their maiden title last year.

Supported by Standard Bank, The Namibian Newspaper Cup runs from 7 to 10 April at Otjiwarongo’s Paresis Sport Ground.

Like last year, Kunene will face the same opponents, taking on Hardap and former winners Omusati in the group stages.

“In terms of our depth and experience, we have retained over 55% of the players who featured in last year’s edition. We have added eight new players and the team is now more experienced and can take on any opponent,” Nangombe said in an interview with Desert Radio this week.

“They [rivals] must expect to be met with fire.

We have a project established in 2021 when the cup was cancelled due to Covid-19.

The project is ongoing as we fielded our under-17 players during the 20th edition of The Namibian Newspaper Cup.”
Failure to host the Kunene region Governors Cup has not affected the selection process, as the technical team called on players from the region’s first and second division teams.

“We have a three-year project that has support from the regional council office, governor’s office and the business sector. Everybody is supporting the lads, and with the talent at our disposal, we can smoke out any opponent,” said Nangombe.
