THE Kunene Regional Council says it has put measures in place to rehabilitate and upgrade worn-out roads in the region, with strategic plans and assessment already done.
The council says it is aware of numerous road accidents being caused by dilapidated roads in the region and it has therefore developed a strategic plan in line with the government’s aspirations and direction for sustainable development in the region, to repair and resurface heavily damaged and outlived roads.
A spokesperson for the regional council, Tulimekondjo Pandeni, told Nampa in an interview on Friday that the council has done an inspection of worn-out roads in the region and is assessing and trying to find provisional solutions to the problem.
Pandeni noted that the council cannot construct permanent bridges for now as there are other plans of constructing or tearing up the roads in future.
She asked the public to bear with the council as it is well aware of community safety on decayed roads.
According to Pandeni, with assessments done and feasibility studies undertaken, it is now up to the council to give a green light for the project to commence.
“I cannot say when exactly, as this process also requires a go-ahead from the government,” she said.
Epupa constituency regional councillor Nguzu Muharukua echoed Pandeni’s statement, saying the dilemma has already been identified and valuations are done, but it will take time to find ultimate solutions as such projects require huge capital.
“While the council is busy with developmental plans to rehabilitate and construct the said roads, the public should be more vigilant when driving on these roads and avoid crossing river points,” said Muharukua.
At the same time, he added that most of the roads in the region are “a menace” and need fixing to prevent the loss of more lives on poor roads. – Nampa
