Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, LPM’s Swartbooi to battle for speaker post

Former prime minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila and Landless People’s Movement leader Bernadus Swartbooi will battle it out for the National Assembly speaker post.

This follows nominations from the parliamentarians.

Kuugongelwa-Amadhila was nominated by Swapo secretary general Sophia Shaningwa, who says she has the capacity to lead the chamber given her experience.

“She has the intellectual capacity and experience to lead this house,” she said during the swearing in for the new National Assembly members on Thursday.

Swartbooi was nominated by Independent Patriots for Change member of parliament Imms Nashinge.

Nashinge says Swartbooi, who is a lawyer by profession and a former Hardap region governor, has the ability and experience to be the speaker of parliament.
