POLICE yesterday arrested a legal practitioner in the Oshana Region, northern Namibia, for allegedly trying to defraud the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund.Police Chief Inspector Angula Amulungu confirmed yesterday that the lawyer is set to appear in court in Windhoek today.
The MVA Fund was established to pay compensation to victims of motor vehicle accidents. In a statement late yesterday, the MVA Fund said the lawyer had been representing a woman who lodged a claim with them in 2000 for the loss of support for herself and her children after her husband was killed in a car accident. The woman, Ndinelao Nangha, died in February 2001, before her claim was finalised. The lawyer was apparently informed of the claimant’s death, but allegedly continued to represent to the fund that she was still alive, and the fund subsequently paid out N$75 956 to the ‘claimant’.”The trail of how the money was distributed indicates an intent to defraud the Fund,” the statement alleges.”The Fund would like to caution the public that investigations are continuing to uncover all fraud against the Fund and will continue working with the Police to ensure that more arrests ensue.”The Fund has requested the public to assist with any information about any fraud against the MVA Fund by calling the Toll Free Fraud Line at 0800 66 66 66.In a statement late yesterday, the MVA Fund said the lawyer had been representing a woman who lodged a claim with them in 2000 for the loss of support for herself and her children after her husband was killed in a car accident. The woman, Ndinelao Nangha, died in February 2001, before her claim was finalised. The lawyer was apparently informed of the claimant’s death, but allegedly continued to represent to the fund that she was still alive, and the fund subsequently paid out N$75 956 to the ‘claimant’.”The trail of how the money was distributed indicates an intent to defraud the Fund,” the statement alleges.”The Fund would like to caution the public that investigations are continuing to uncover all fraud against the Fund and will continue working with the Police to ensure that more arrests ensue.”The Fund has requested the public to assist with any information about any fraud against the MVA Fund by calling the Toll Free Fraud Line at 0800 66 66 66.
