Lightning kills girl, boy (8) takes own life in Zambezi

A BOY (8) allegedly took his own life this weekend, while a girl (10) died after she was struck by lightning in the Zambezi region.

Both incidents happened at Mashosho village in the Kongola constituency.

The deceased children were identified as Tapelo Liyemo and Rosemary Likanyi.

Their next of kin have been informed of their deaths.

Regional police spokesperson inspector Kisco Sitali on Sunday said when Liyemo arrived home from school on Friday, he found that his younger brother had finished the meat and only left him pap for lunch.

Sitali sai the boy’s mother then told him to go and look for mutete to cook and eat with the pap.

“However, her telling him that made him angry, but she didn’t realise this at the time. The boy then disappeared from the house and the mother thought the deceased went to his friends. His body was found 51m from the house in the bushes on Saturday.

“No suicide note was found or foul play suspected,” he said.

Meanwhile, Likanyi and others were standing under a tree at around 18h30 on Friday when lightning struck and instantly killed her.

“She was transported to Choi clinic by family members, where a nurse confirmed her dead. The other individuals present were unharmed,” he said.

In another, unrelated incident, a woman, identified as Mishenyi Malumbano (70), died on Friday when a tree fell on her house as a result of heavy storms at Liselo village.

Sitali said Malumbano was inside the house with three children, who sustained minor injuries and received medical attention at Katima Mulilo District Hospital.
